Intriguing product launch; a sculptural space shaped by light and materiality and calm clarity

During 3daysofdesign, Georg Jensen presented Penumbra in a sculptural installation designed by Studio David Thulstrup. The ambition was to create a calm, immersive setting where light, material and form support the experience of the piece. The result is a refined installation in matte aluminium, where simplicity and atmosphere guide visitors through a quiet spatial journey.

A Sculptural Space Shaped by Light and Calm
During 3daysofdesign, Georg Jensen’s flagship store in Copenhagen was transformed into a temporary installation centred around Penumbra. Designed by Studio David Thulstrup, the installation introduced a restrained and atmospheric universe where light and materiality played a central role. Curved walls in matte brushed aluminium defined the space, forming a narrow passage that gently guided visitors inward. As the light shifted across the soft metal surfaces, the installation unfolded as a calm, museum like experience, inviting slow movement and focused attention. The spatial composition was deliberately simple. Rather than competing with the object on display, the architecture framed Penumbra as a singular presence, allowing its form and craftsmanship to take centre stage. The subdued expression created a clear contrast to the surrounding city and exhibition activity, offering visitors a moment of quiet immersion within the broader design festival.

Monumental Simplicity as a Design Language
The installation was developed in close collaboration between Georg Jensen and David Thulstrup, with a shared focus on form, light and material. The curved aluminium walls enveloped the space and established a coherent visual language where every element served a clear purpose. Matte surfaces absorbed and reflected light softly, reinforcing the sense of calm and precision that characterises both the installation and the object it presented. Penumbra was treated not as a product, but as a sculptural work. The surrounding architecture supported this reading by remaining minimal and controlled, ensuring that attention stayed on proportion, shadow and detail. The result was an installation where design and narrative merged seamlessly into one composed experience.

A Reusable Installation Designed to Live On
From the outset, the installation was conceived with longevity in mind. The design was developed to be reused and adapted in new contexts, extending its life beyond a single event. This approach ensured that the architectural elements could continue to add value while maintaining their refined expression. By combining simple geometry, durable materials and a clear spatial idea, the installation demonstrates how temporary exhibitions can be both precise and lasting. The Penumbra installation stands as an example of how light, material and spatial restraint can create a powerful experience, one that feels deliberate, calm and carefully considered.
