With modular solutions and flexible design, the West Hall at Fængslet has been transformed into a modern gathering space that brings history into the present. The custom-built elements allow the room to be quickly and efficiently adapted for different types of events.
Vestsalen is the new cultural and conference hall at Fængslet - a former prison. It is created by opening the western wing between the inner and outer prison yards and covering the inner courtyard with a glass roof. The transformation has given Fængslet a new expression and created a flexible, contemporary space that can host everything from conferences and community activities to large cultural events.
Flexibility, atmosphere and international quality
Vestsalen balances respect for the site’s historical legacy with innovative functionality and refined aesthetics. The simple and restrained expression has been maintained throughout both architecture and interior, where robust materials such as burnt steel and expanded metal give the iconic bar areas a raw yet elegant character. The modular solutions make it possible to quickly adapt the space – from gala dinner to reception or concert. Buffet modules on wheels can be varied, combined and easily nested like a modern ‘babushka’ when not in use. With our contribution to the interior realization, we helped create the framework for a space that not only hosts events but elevates them..
