An Immersive Cold War Exhibition Brought to Life Through Scenography and Precision

Regan Vest’s welcome and exhibition building opens one of Denmark’s most secret Cold War sites to the public. Ambiente realised the exhibition across seven zones, combining storytelling, custom-built elements and advanced technical execution. The result is a cohesive museum experience where history, atmosphere and detail come together.

A Welcome and Exhibition Building Revealing Hidden Cold War History
Regan Vest’s welcome and exhibition building invites visitors to experience a hidden chapter of Danish history. The exhibition combines information, learning and engagement as visitors are guided through seven zones that present different aspects of the Cold War era. From the first step into the exhibition, visitors are surrounded by specially developed elements where design, detail and storytelling work together to support the museum’s narrative. Developed by Kumulus Agency and realised by Ambiente, the exhibition transforms a former secret site into a public and accessible experience.

Custom-Built Installations and Detailed Scenography
At the centre of the exhibition is a complex model of the bunker’s corridor system, suspended in the middle of the room. The model is built with a steel core and finished with MDF and 3D-printed components, illustrating the intricate underground structure with great precision. Surrounding this are numerous custom-built installations, including an atomic bomb replica with simulated detonation, interactive control rooms and reconstructions of secret emergency procedures. The exhibition also features scenographic recreations of a family home and interpretations of nuclear warheads, offering insight into both national defence and everyday life during the Cold War.

Technical Complexity Behind a Seamless Museum Experience
The exhibition began as an empty space and was realised through extensive development, room construction and hundreds of technical drawings. Every element was carefully customised to ensure accuracy, safety and functionality, allowing complex installations to work seamlessly together. Although the technical execution behind the exhibition is highly advanced, it remains discreet and invisible to visitors. The finished exhibition offers a sensory and coherent museum experience that brings the Cold War era to life, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of a time when the bunker lay hidden beneath Rold Forest.
