A Modern Social Hub Shaped Within Historic Prison Architecture and Flexible Use

With modular solutions and a flexible interior approach, the West Hall at Fængslet has been transformed into a modern gathering space rooted in a historic setting. Ambiente realised custom-built interior elements that allow the space to be adapted quickly and efficiently for different types of events. A Historic Space Transformed Into a Modern Gathering Place
With modular solutions and a flexible design approach, the West Hall at Fængslet has been transformed into a contemporary gathering space that brings history into the present. The former prison has gained a new cultural and conference hall, Vestsalen, created by opening the western wing between the inner and outer prison yards and covering the inner courtyard with a glass roof. This transformation has introduced daylight into the building and formed a large, unified space that supports a wide range of activities. The new hall allows Fængslet to host conferences, community events and large cultural gatherings, while maintaining a strong connection to the site’s past.

Flexibility Designed for Many Types of Events
Flexibility was a core requirement for the West Hall. The space needed to adapt quickly and efficiently to different event formats without compromising atmosphere or functionality. Ambiente developed a series of custom-built and modular interior elements that allow the hall to be reconfigured with ease. From gala dinners and receptions to concerts and public events, the room can be adjusted to suit changing needs. Buffet modules on wheels can be combined, rearranged or stored compactly when not in use, nesting neatly within each other. This modular system ensures efficient handling and supports smooth transitions between different uses throughout the day.

Materials That Respect the Site’s History
The interior expression balances respect for the building’s historical legacy with contemporary use. A simple and restrained design language has been maintained throughout the interior, allowing the existing architecture to remain present. Robust materials such as burnt steel and expanded metal define key elements, including the iconic bar areas, giving them a raw yet elegant character. These materials are both durable and visually strong, making them suitable for a space with high daily use. The material choices reinforce the identity of the former prison while supporting a modern and functional interior.

A Cultural Venue That Elevates the Experience
Today, Vestsalen functions as a flexible and modern cultural space within Fængslet. The combination of adaptable layouts, durable materials and clear organisation creates a strong framework for events of many kinds. Rather than competing with the historic setting, the interior supports it and allows activities to unfold naturally. Ambiente’s contribution has helped establish a venue that not only accommodates events but enhances them, offering a contemporary gathering place where history, atmosphere and functionality come together in one cohesive space.
