Temporary Architectural Works Activating the City’s Waterfront Space and Life
For Aarhus Festival, Harbour Magnets transformed the harbourfront into a lively public destination. The installations were designed to attract people to the waterfront and create new places for gathering and activity. Ambiente contributed to the development, construction and installation of five of the eight Harbour Magnets, helping bring the project to life.

Architectural Installations Activating the Harbourfront
Harbour Magnets were created as a series of temporary installations that encouraged visitors to explore and spend time along the harbour in Aarhus. The works attracted thousands of people during the festival and quickly became recognisable landmarks in the urban landscape. Their purpose was simple and effective: to draw people towards the water and create new patterns of movement and interaction in the city. Ambiente was responsible for developing, building and installing five of the eight installations. Each magnet was designed to be visually striking while remaining accessible and engaging for the public, allowing visitors to experience the works up close as part of the festival atmosphere.
Complex Construction Under Special Conditions
Several of the Harbour Magnets involved technically demanding solutions. One installation required craftsmen to work up to 33 metres above ground to raise and secure large flags, demanding careful planning and strict safety procedures. Another involved suspending a large helium balloon nine metres above the ground, positioned to resemble a floating full moon above the harbourfront. Despite their playful and light appearance, the installations had to be structurally sound and capable of withstanding weather conditions and continuous public presence. This required detailed technical preparation and precise execution throughout the process.
Temporary Works With Strong Public Impact
All construction and installation work took place in a live public environment during Aarhus Festival, with large numbers of visitors passing through the area each day. The installations were completed on time and functioned reliably throughout the event. Harbour Magnets succeeded in creating activity, visibility and social interaction along the harbour. The project demonstrates how temporary installations, when carefully developed and executed, can have a strong and memorable impact on public space and urban life.
"Bringing an artistic project like The Harbour Magnets to life, the centrepiece of the 2017 Aarhus Festival, demands extraordinary resources and expertise. We are truly pleased that we chose to collaborate with Ambiente. They immediately grasped the architects’ ambitious vision, translated it into reality, and maintained complete oversight of all legal and safety requirements involved in building in public spaces. Their experience and professionalism were invaluable to the success of the project."
Henrik Gadegaard, Administration Manager at Aarhus Festival
